Nanotechnology allows Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to work. Imagine where we’d be without that technology! In a similar fashion, nanotechnology is used in farming & and agriculture to help primary producers move beyond 30-year old more dangerous, less effective techniques to enrol precision chemistry to produce smarter, faster, better results in farming and food production.

Dr. Darren Anderson is a co-founder and CEO of Vive Crop Protection and serves on its Board of Directors. Darren is passionate about using technology to improve the sustainability of agriculture while creating quantifiable results for growers. Darren is on the Board of CropLife America, the trade association for the pesticide industry in the USA; a member of the Advisory Committee for CHLOE, an organization committed to increasing STEM learning through agriculture and natural resources; and a founding member of ElectSTEM, a non-profit encouraging people with STEM backgrounds to run for political office.
Under Darren’s leadership, Vive has raised over $43M CAD of equity and debt, launched the first nanotechnology-enabled pesticide products that are approved by the EPA, and doubled its commercial business annually for the last 4 years. Dr. Anderson is the inventor on 13 issued patents and 44 pending applications. Dr. Anderson earned his PhD from University of Toronto as an NSERC doctoral fellow.

With a background in fashion and real estate, Laura launched Maison Tess. in 2017– who, when decorating her dream family home, realized there was a gap in the market when it came to finding bedding that was both practical and stylish. As Laura explains, "We aim to help people dress their homes the same way they do their wardrobe. With fashion, people dress to show an authentic expression of who they are and that is exactly the feeling we want to bring into your home." Laura named Maison Tess. after her family; T for Thomas, her husband, E for her son Elie, and double S for her daughter Sasha.

Guillermo Salazar is a Co-Founder of ICwhatUC, an industry-leading augmented reality virtual work platform that helps the mobile workforce execute remote work. He is a 20-year data & analytics professional and multiple-time founder. He began his career in consulting, left PWC to start his own ERP firm, and then sold Quatro Integration Group to Deloitte Consulting.
His entrepreneurial spirit meant starting another company of his own, and Salazar set about finding a solution to the frustration of dialing into a call centre, trying to communicate a problem and then waiting for days to get it fixed. Hence, ICwhatUC was born.
Salazar earned a finance degree from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. He is in his ninth year as a member of its management advisory committee and is past chair of the Haskayne Alumni Board.

Kelsey Carignan is a mother of two boys and was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2018 at the age of 32 years old. Kelsey decided to make breast cancer the best thing that ever happened to her and started sharing her breast cancer journey online when she realised there was a lack of relatable and real content available for people going through the same thing. She also started asking people to complete random acts of kindness and to tag her so she could see how much good could come from a negative situation which helped to get her through her lowest points. After undergoing a bilateral mastectomy and eight aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, Kelsey is now in remission and is using her voice and her knowledge to empower and uplift others going through similar experiences with her platform Vibrant Yogi.

Michelle Zatlyn is co-founder, President and COO of Cloudflare, the Internet security, performance, and reliability company on a mission to help build a better Internet. Cloudflare is a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: NET). Prior to co-founding Cloudflare, Michelle held positions at Google and Toshiba and launched two successful startups. Michelle sits on the World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders Foundation Board. Michelle has been named to Fortune’s 40 Under 40 list and was part of Marie Claire’s 7th Annual New Guard. She holds a B.S. degree, with distinction, from McGill University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was awarded the Dubilier Prize for Entrepreneurship.

In our podcast today, Leah Nguyen talks about Telus – once primarily renowned as a communications company and now diversified in health, education, agriculture and the environment; and how this progressive corporation is leveraging the power of technology and social impact investing to drive better social outcomes and economic growth.
You’ll learn what sectors the Telus Pollinator Fund funds, what size and level of investment they make, and how global companies can access the fund if there is a dire t or indirect benefit to Canadians.
Leah is an Investment Director for the TELUS Pollinator Fund for Good, which brings a dual-lens approach to investing in the next generation of startups that are leveraging technology to build solutions that drive positive social, health, and/or environmental outcomes. She drove the strategy and execution for launching the TELUS Pollinator Fund for Good, and now leads sourcing, evaluating, and executing investment opportunities that align with the Fund’s key areas of focus. Leah is active in the startup ecosystem, mentoring entrepreneurs and aspiring VCs, and regularly participates in speaking engagements and as a judge in pitch competitions.
Prior to launching the Pollinator Fund for Good, Leah held different roles at TELUS. Most recently, she was with TELUS Ventures, one of Canada’s longest standing and most active corporate venture funds where she helped to identify and source investments to drive growth into new markets while also serving as a strategic advisor to other TELUS business units.
Before TELUS, Leah was a management consultant with Accenture and a project manager at lululemon athletica. Outside of work, Leah stays active with her husband and three kids, serves as a board member for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, and volunteers with the parent advisory committee at her children’s school. She holds a BBA from Simon Fraser University.

Roxeanne Power, a local entrepreneur, opened her second Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa in Oshawa on December 9th, 2020. Hand & Stone is the premier massage and facial brand that has 475+ locations across the U.S. and Canada. We take a look at a successful franchise system and how and how Power's first location in Ajax helps. Roxanne, the daughter of entrepreneurs in Newfoundland sold her first business, a daycare, and then chose to go the franchise route, people stay healthy and happy through the pandemic, Power also discusses how she hopes the business will help with the economic recovery of the city with the influx of much-needed jobs. Power always knew she wanted to own a business that would allow her to connect with and provide for a community. She started out helping her mother run a business in their hometown of Lamaline, Newfoundland, but after a few months, Power realized that staying in Lamaline and working at her mother’s business wasn’t for her. She moved to Ontario and found Hand & Stone. After opening her Ajax location in 2018, business took off and positioned her for future growth.
